Interactive Zipper Reveal Animation
A creative interactive zipper reveal built with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and SVG. Drag the zipper to open the fabric and uncover a miniature illustrated world with smooth physics, keyboard controls, and an optional auto-demo mode.
Use the same code shown in the video.
Interactive Zipper Reveal Animation is a creative frontend microinteraction built with pure HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and SVG.
The experience starts with a closed fabric surface and a realistic metallic zipper. Users can grab the zipper handle and drag it downward to gradually open the fabric, revealing a colorful miniature landscape hidden underneath.
Unlike a simple clip-path animation, the opening reacts dynamically to the zipper position. The fabric edges deform as the handle moves, the zipper teeth follow the changing shape, shadows and folds respond to the opening, and the hidden scene becomes progressively visible.
The revealed illustration includes a warm sky, sun, mountains, trees, a house, landscape details, and a small greeting that appears near the end of the opening sequence.
The zipper interaction is designed to feel physical rather than purely decorative. JavaScript calculates the opening geometry in real time and uses spring-style motion to give the fabric a softer, more natural response while the user drags the handle.
The component also includes an optional Auto Demo mode. When enabled, the zipper automatically opens and closes, making it useful for portfolio previews, landing-page demonstrations, creative showcases, and social media recordings.
Keyboard interaction is supported as well. Users can control the zipper using the arrow keys, jump directly to the closed position with Home, or open it completely with End.
The component includes accessibility-focused details such as a real slider role, ARIA value updates, keyboard controls, screen-reader status output, focus styling, and support for the user's reduced-motion preference.
Everything is contained in a single standalone HTML file. No external UI framework, JavaScript library, icon package, image asset, or animation library is required.

How It Works
The zipper position is represented as progress between 0 and 1.
As the handle moves, JavaScript recalculates the opening geometry and determines how far the left and right fabric panels should separate.
The fabric edges are generated dynamically, allowing the opening to widen naturally instead of relying on a fixed static shape.
The zipper teeth are then positioned along those deformed edges at consistent distances so they continue to follow the fabric as it opens.
A lightweight spring simulation is used to make the cloth respond smoothly to changes in zipper position. This creates a slight delay between the user's movement and the fabric response, giving the interaction a more physical feel.
As the zipper approaches the fully open state, additional details inside the hidden scene appear, including illuminated house windows and a greeting.
Auto Demo
The built-in Auto Demo switch can automatically open and close the zipper.
This is useful when presenting the component in a portfolio, recording a demo, or showing the interaction without requiring manual input.
The automatic sequence pauses when the user begins interacting with the zipper.
Accessibility
The zipper handle uses slider semantics and exposes its current opening percentage through ARIA attributes.
Keyboard users can control the interaction with:
• Arrow Down or Arrow Right to open
• Arrow Up or Arrow Left to close
• Home to close completely
• End to open completely
A screen-reader status output also reports the current open percentage.
The component detects the prefers-reduced-motion setting and adjusts motion behavior for users who request reduced animation.
Responsive Design
The interaction scales to fit smaller screens while preserving the SVG proportions and zipper behavior.
Viewport-aware sizing is used to keep the full interactive scene usable across desktop and mobile layouts.
Customization
You can modify the fabric colors, background, landscape illustration, zipper appearance, hidden scene, opening speed, spring behavior, auto-demo timing, and reveal effects directly in the source code.
Because the artwork is built with inline SVG, you can replace the miniature landscape with another illustration, product reveal, message, image composition, or branded visual without adding external assets.
